Generic Tossed Salad
You can find this in countless restaurants and dinner tables all across America.
1 head Iceberg lettuce, chopped into bite-sized pieces
1 tomato, cut into wedges
1/2 of a red onion, thinly sliced
1/2 of a cucumber, sliced
1 radish, sliced
a few black olives
Iceberg lettuce is the perfect base, being bitter yet tasteless.
Make sure the tomato is a supermarket variety, picked when green
and reddened by chemical treatment to survive for weeks. The more
it tastes like cardboard the better.
Add a cheap bottle of Italian dressing and toss.
Bullets and Beer Salad
When I make a salad it is a meal, not a side dish.
1 head Boston lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces
-or-
1 head Romaine lettuce, with the leaves torn and the veins discarded
a handful of cherry or sweet grape tomatoes
several chunks of sharp cheese, preferably Vermont cheddar
several chunks of Hickory Farms summer sausage or hard salami
several green olives
two or three pepperoncini
a few sweet gherkins, sliced
a goodly layer of herb and garlic croutons
Top with half a bottle of Thousand Island dressing.
